Ofsted
Congratulations to all of us on a really positive Ofsted. The report will be out shortly but all aspects of the inspection showed what rapid progress our school has made - so well done - onwards and upwards!
Cross-curricular week, 16th-20th June 2008
The normal timetable will be suspended and students will work in learning centres on the topic “Building a better world. During the week students will experience a variety of international learning experiences which will give them a deeper understanding of diversity and an understanding of global citizenship. Amongst other things students will collect data on world-wide pollution, compare diets from other countries, research international sport, investigate global inequality and experience music from around the world.
Each year group will visit each learning centre for 3 time-tabled slots each lasting 1 hour 40 minutes. They will work collaboratively and share their findings with students in our partner schools abroad. Photographs of the activities will be posted on our web-site for all to see at the end of the week.
If parents would like to see the students in action, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Peak in the first instance who will organise your visit.
International Cookbook
As part of the International Award, lower school students will be working during cross-curricular week on the design and production of an international cookbook. You are invited to send in with your son any traditional/family recipes that you would like to see included in the book.
‘Naughty Treat’ Stall
On Friday during cross-curricular week we shall be running a ‘naughty treat’ stall to raise money for a Ugandan charity which is currently building and resourcing an Aids Education Centre for children whose families have died from Aids. The centre aims to provide teaching on how to protect young people from contracting Aids and help family members with the disease. Any funds raised will go towards equipment for the centre, such as more beds to allow young people to stay the night after walking many miles to receive the training, and money to pay for teachers. We are asking students and parents to donate cakes, sweets and chocolate to sell on the staff to support this one off event. Please ask you son to bring any donations to Mrs Lerego.
Fair Trade Day
On Monday 9th June as Upper Shirley High School, we hosted the Co-operative College’s Face to Face event in the Bellemoor Business Centre, with the aim of introducing school students to the idea of ethics in enterprise. Students and teachers who took part in the event came from neighbouring schools (Cantell, Bitterne Park, Beaulieu, St. Marks and Shirley Junior School). Five people directly involved in Fairtrade commodity production from Peru, Nicaragua, Mexico and Uganda gave our students an insight into the effect that Fairtrade can have in improving the lives of some of the world’s poorest communities. Students had the chance to ask questions and hear authentic Spanish, which was of enormous benefit to our GCSE pupils. 8 workshops were organised so that students from the participating schools worked collaboratively to produce booklets, songs, and games based around the Fairtrade theme.
Junior Science Club Awards

Congratulations to a group of young scientists from Shirley Juniors, who are joining us in Year 7 next year, who have gained the British Association ‘Creativity in Science and Technology’ Megastar award, simply by having a great time doing 3 science investigations. They have really grown in confidence over the weeks. So well done to Charlie Jackopson, Sammi King, Hannah Ward, Joseph Marsh, Brendan Salmon, Lewis Foreman, Arron Mawson-Sidley, Jack Foster and Harry Woodward and thanks to our science department for their hard work and encouragement.

From Wednesday 18th June Mrs Coombs and Mrs Kelly will be running a Reporters Club to give the students the opportunity to produce their own magazine every half term. We hope to cover articles on music, sport, fashion, film and game reviews and funny jokes. If your son is interested please ask him to see Mrs Kelly in the General Office.
