Day at Chilworth Manor

On 2nd May, Ryan, Otis, Charlie, and Sam set off at half past nine to Chilworth Manor. Before leaving we completed a questionnaire about what we prefer in a good lesson. On arrival at Chilworth Manor we were taken to a hall where we were educated on how a student evaluates learning. We were engaged with pupils from Cantell, Noadswood, Quilley, Bitterne Park and Wildern.

The first activity was a group bonding activity where we had a sticker put on our backs. We had to work out what we were and which group we belonged to. This put us into random groups with people from different schools. We had to find out things we had in common, to see how much we were alike, to make us feel more comfortable.

In our new groups we brainstormed what we expected in a good lesson. Some of the things we thought of were; equal respect between staff and pupils, a lesson needs to be fun, and it needs to consist of tasks for the three types of learning styles – kinaesthetic, visual and auditory. After that we found out what pupils from Wildern do as student evaluators.

At break we had orange juice and luxury crumbly biscuits. After break we went back to our school groups. We worked as a group to list questions to help us advise teachers on what is a good lesson for learning. After this we watched and took notes on a video of a science lesson. After the video we role played the teacher and student to practise how we will word suggestions to the teachers.

We then had lunch. The food was prepared to an amazing standard. After lunch we were allowed to stroll around the Manor’s grounds. Then we came back into the hall to discuss the rules we will be using at Upper Shirley High / Bellemoor. We are excited to start observing lessons.
