Learning Futures

Dear Parent/Carer,

The Learning Futures consultation on the future shape of secondary education in Southampton has now closed and I would like to thank all the parents and carers in the city for giving us their views.

It was important for us to seek the opinion of school communities and consider this alongside criteria such as improving educational standards, giving better choice for parents of Southampton and making best use of the available school sites.

You may also recall the challenges faced by the city in regard to falling pupil numbers and the financial implications for schools; aging buildings and cramped sites. Recommendations have now been developed which it is felt meet these challenges and offer a constructive and positive way forward for our children.

These are:

Millbrook Community School and Oaklands Community School
Both schools to close in July 2008 and a new school will open on the former Oaklands site in September 2008. The school will accommodate 900 pupils. The former Millbrook site to be used as an annex until building work has been completed at the new school and pupils currently in Year 9 have completed their GCSEs. Alternative educational, leisure and community uses for the former Millbrook site to be investigated by the council in consultation with the community.

The council is also recommending that in the future the new school, along with the Down to Earth Educational Farm, could be moved to the Five Acre Field site, at the junction of Romsey Road and Redbridge Lane, to enable the development of a Learning Campus. This recommendation would need further investigation and consultation with the new school and community.

Bellemoor Boys’ School and Regents Park Community College
From September 2008, both schools to start admitting both boys and girls to Year 7. Each school to have a capacity of 750 pupils and be linked more closely to their local primary schools.
The council is also recommending that Bellemoor should be developed as a Learning Campus and Regents Park be relocated to the St Mark’s Church of England Junior School site, where another Learning Campus could be developed. Both of these recommendations would need further investigation and consultation with the schools and community.

Grove Park Business and Enterprise College and Woolston School Language College
Both schools to close in July 2008 and a new school to open in September 2008 on the former Grove Park site. This school would accommodate 900 pupils. The former Woolston site to be used as an annex until building work has been completed on the new school and pupils currently in Year 9 have completed their GCSEs. The Woolston site to be sold once it is no longer required by the new school.
